RS preload pistons first became popular in the US in the mid-1990s, although they appeared earlier in series like Formula One. A preload curve is the exact opposite of a progressive setting. In this style, you start with a stiffer damping rate at low speeds, gradually reducing it as piston speed increases. The benefit of using this damping curve is that the stiffer low-speed damping gives the driver a more stable feel, as the damping feels strongest at low speeds. When you use a linear curve, increasing the stiffness of the low-speed damping results in stiffer high-speed damping, which can be problematic over large bumps or curbs. This problem led to the development of a preload curve, as it allows for a stiffer low-speed damping rate while avoiding the higher damping rate at high speeds. In other words, it gives you the best of both worlds.
